Description and Context

When the new hospital opened in 1925, Dr. Charles Shepard implemented changes to meet national changes for hospital quality. A patient chart system was put in place that required documentation of a history and physical on all patients.The first laboratory and X-ray equipment were installed. In cooperation with the Durham County Health Department, the hospital operated two clinics, one for well-babies and one for patients with tuberculosis.
