Description and Context

Graduation exercises for the Lincoln Hospital School of Nursing, shown here c. 1959, rotated annually from their location on the front lawn of the hospital to the pews of Durham's African-American churches. Nearly every church in the African-American community hosted some part of the celebration, whether it was baccalaureate or graduation itself, at some point in its history.
