Description and Context

Mrs. Margaret Kennedy Goodwin graduated from Talladega College in 1938 with a major in chemistry. With aspirations for a career in science, she was pulled into Lincoln Hospital by a plea for help running the x-ray department. Margaret Goodwin obtained specialized training at Duke Hospital and at Philadelphia General Hospital and was registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technicians in 1947. She was the first African American elected to membership in the North Carolina Society of Radiology Technology and the first African American elected president of the group. Mrs. Goodwin continued as director of radiology at the Lincoln Community Health Center until 1982 when she retired with 40 years of service.
