On March 18, 1915, five physicians founded the Burrell Memorial Hospital in a remodeled cottage allowing room for only 10 patients. The hospital moved to the old Allegheny Institute in 1921 and remained there until July 1955. The hospital then relocated to the current (as of 1963) facility of 96 beds.
