Description and Context

William Rich, director of Lincoln Hospital of Durham, North Carolina, developed a broad base of financial and voluntary support throughout the community in part, by working through the churches. Through special church offerings, donation drives and other activities to raise money and obtain essential supplies, many people in the black community came to understand the financial struggles of operating a hospital with a large percentage of charity patients.
