Description and Context
The dedication of the new wing of Lincoln Hospital drew hundreds of people from the area to the lawn of the hospital in 1953. Seated here are the speakers. From left to right they are: William Rich, Director of Lincoln Hospital, William Jesse Kennedy Jr, president of the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company and master of ceremonies; Dr. Hollis A. Edens, president of Duke University, and Dr. Alphonso Elder, president of North Carolina College. Dr. Hollis Edens praised the community for its cooperative efforts to expand the hostpitals for both African-American and white residents of Durham.
