Description and Context

In 1955, Dr. William A. Cleland, Durham's first African American pediatrician, completed a masters of science with post-graduate fellowship training in neonatology in New York University. Upon his return the Lincoln Hospital Women's Auxiliary raised money to purchase the first modern incubator for his use at Lincoln Hospital.
