Description and Context

Lincoln Hospital established scientific medicine within Durham's African-American community. A necessary step in that transition was to move surgery off the patient's kitchen table into aseptic operating rooms using sterilized surgical instruments. By 1925, surgery, both minor and major operations, was the principal activity of general hospitals, including Lincoln Hospital. There is no indication that operations were cancelled because of the lack of essential equipment. (Courtesy of Margaret Kennedy Goodwin.)
