Description and Context

Miss Patricia Hawkins Carter, R.N., joined the administrative staff in 1911 as director of nursing. During her 37-year tenure with Lincoln Hospital, she served in nearly every leadership capacity, working closely with Dr. Aaron Moore, then Dr. Charles Shepard, and finally Mr. William Rich. From 1935 to 1945, she both directed the nurses training program and served as assistant superintendent of the hospital. She was known to prepare meals in the kitchen, dispense medicines form the pharmacy, mop floors, and help out wherever needed. In 1927 historian William K. Boyd attributed the success of the institution to her dedication and countless hours of work. (Courtesy of The Scalpel, 1946.)
