Description and Context

The cap given to each student prior to going onto the clinical wards had no stripes and was the freshman cap. The second year or junior cap had one stripe running vertically on each side of the front of the cap, while the third year or senior cap had two stripes on each side of the front of the cap. A Lincoln Hospital graduate R.N. wore a cap with one stripe running horizontally across the top. (Courtesy of Nightingale, 1959.)
