Description and Context

The admitting office of Lincoln Hospital was the first stopping point for patients who entered the hospital for elective procedures. As much information as possible was obtained in order to determine their financial resources. Those patients that were indigent were provided care without charge, but those with even modest resources were asked to pay the full cost of their hospital bill. Lincoln Hospital obtained some funds from the Duke Endowment and the Durham City and County governments to help meet the expenses of care to non-paying patients.
